Humphrey Nwosu was born on the 2nd of October, 1941. A native of …, Anambra State. His patriotism earned him a leadership position in the National Electoral Commission (NEC) in 1989. President Ibrahim Babangida appointed him the Chairman of the commission; a position he sustained with integrity till when Nigeria held her democratic election in 1993 after many years of military rule.
History has it that the 1993 democratic election as conducted under his watch has been ‘ the freest and fairest’ election in Nigeria to date.
This was possible because he introduced the open ballot system, which paved the way for Chief Moshood Abiola’s victorious emergence before the annulment of the election. In essence, he was the one who laid the democratic foundation for Nigerian society.
He died at the age of 83 on the 20th of October, 2024, in Virginia, USA.
