Eco Zone Club Leads Tree Planting Initiative at Nigerian Institute of Journalism

In a bid to promote environmental conservation and provide a serene space for students to relax, the Eco Zone Club of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ) embarked on a tree planting exercise on the 30th of December,2024. The event, which was attended by esteemed members of the group, marked a significant step towards transforming the school’s terrace into a lush garden.

A Collective Effort

The tree planting exercise was a collaborative effort between the Eco Zone Club members, including the founding lecturer, Mr. Anthony Oligbo; president, Emmanuel; vice president, Morenikeji; general secretary, Godwin; and other dedicated members, Temilade, Blessing, and Mrs. Dickson Ihejirika. Each participant played a vital role in planting the “Masquerade Tree” specie, carefully selected for its unique characteristics, and environmental benefits.

Origins and Objectives

The initiative, originally inspired by the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF), aims to create a peaceful garden space where students can relax and unwind during their leisure time. Moreover, the project seeks to educate students on the importance of trees in our lives, promoting environmental awareness and conservation.

Interviews and Insights

Before the tree planting exercise, Mrs. Dickson Ihejirika, the founding editor of Trending Gists and Communication Network interviewed the founding lecturer, the president and others about their view concerning the tree planting exercise.

When asked about the project, the founding lecturer, Mr. Anthony Oligbo, expressed his enthusiasm and commitment to the initiative. “We produce carbon dioxide to plants and the plants give us oxygen in return, this exercise is to educate and turn this school into a better place.”

The president, Emmanuel, echoed similar sentiments, stating, “This project is a testament to our group’s commitment to promoting environmental awareness and conservation. We are proud to be part of this initiative.”
