HIS BACKGROUND
Professor Humphrey Nwosu was a renowned Nigerian academic administrator and political scientist. Born on 2nd October 1941, in Anambra State, Nigeria, to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Nwosu. He was the fourth of seven children, with siblings, including his elder brothers, Emmanuel and Christopher, and younger sisters, Augusta and Chika.
HIS EARLY LIFE, ACADEMICS, AND CAREER
Professor Nwosu began his academic journey at Ajalli Government School, St. Michael’s School in Enugu, and Presbyterian School in Abakaliki for his primary education. He then attended McGregor College in Afikpo for his secondary education. His outstanding performance earned him admission to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he graduated with a degree in political science.
To further his education, Professor Nwosu proceeded to the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned his Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Political Science.
Upon returning to Nigeria, Professor Nwosu began his academic career as a lecturer at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. His exceptional teaching skills and research prowess quickly earned him recognition, leading to his appointment as Associate Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, from 1979 to 1983.
HIS FAMILY
Professor Nwosu was married to his loving wife, Mrs Chika Nwosu, and they have four children: Nneoma, Chukwuma, Uche, and Ikenna. He enjoyed spending time with his family, often engaging in outdoor activities such as hiking and picnicking. Professor Nwosu was known for his strong family values and prioritised his role as a husband and father.
HIS ACHIEVEMENTS
Professor Nwosu served as Associate Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, from 1979 to 1983. He also coordinated the Local Government Training Programme from 1982 to 1986.
In 1989, President Ibrahim Babangida appointed Professor Nwosu as Chairman of the National Electoral Commission. He conducted the June 12, 1993, presidential election, widely regarded as ‘Nigeria’s freest and fairest election”(Wikipedia).
Professor Nwosu introduced innovative electoral systems, including Option A4 and the Open Ballot system. Despite controversies surrounding the election’s annulment, his commitment to democratic principles remains unparalleled. Essentially, he laid a great foundation for democracy to thrive in Nigeria.
AWARDS AND HONORARY
Throughout his illustrious career, Professor Nwosu received numerous awards and honours, including the National Merit Award and Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic.
Some of Professor Nwosu’s notable publications include “Political Authority and the Nigerian Civil Service” and “Laying the Foundation for Nigeria’s Democracy.” His works offer unique perspectives on Nigeria’s governance.
HIS DEATH
Professor Nwosu passed away on October 20, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to democratic ideals and academic excellence.

Professor Humphrey Nwosu’s contributions to Nigeria’s democratic development and electoral processes have been significant. His legacy will definitely inspire future generations.
