THE PLIGHTS OF LOW INCOME EARNERS IN NIGERIA : SERIES 1

As the inflation is still heating heavily on Nigerians, many citizens are greatly absorbing the impact. Everyone seeks easy way to cushion the effects. Low income earners have no alternative than to pay the heavy price by slashing their budget in a way to sacrifice and remedy their future.

One of my neighbours’ child insisted that his parents should organise a birthday party for him.According to the lad,for many years now, there had not been anything of such for the little lad. Again, his parents had given him the assurance that they must see to it that he marks this year’s birthday, owing to the fact that he has kept a persistent record of academic excellence.

With this, the parents were moved to fufill their long term promise to their well deserving son, despite their economic status.Trust mothers,God always arms us with the managerial skills to meander through difficulties.

As much as in all riches, trust you understand; the woman went ahead to organise a birthday party for his son against all odds.

She invited her neighbours to celebrate her son’s birthday with them. Good a thing, there’s sound system in her house, so one of the neighbour’s son volunteered to serve as the D.J. Soon, the atmosphere was charged; sweet tunes overshadowed the scene;with the whole children trooping out to grace the occasion with different dance steps…

Fast forward the occasion, when it’s time for rice and stew very plenty, in our local parlance(RSTV). People where excited and anxious to have their own well packaged delicacy, but to their amazement, the woman came out and announced with all boldness;

” Abeg na only dodo and water we get, make una manage with us”.

In the heat of the event, she simply shared the wrap with sachet water.

At the end of the day, those who laughed, laughed, there were those who mocked them, but there were those who took advantage of the occasion to truly rejoice and celebrate with them.

What matters most for her, is that she has fulfilled the promise made to her son. The boy danced and rejoiced all through the occasion with other children hailing him as ‘the birthday boy’, ‘the celebrant.’

As people were leaving, I overheard other children asking their own mothers with eagerness, ‘ mummy, when will I celebrate my own birthday?’

Lesson:
Never allow the economic hardship to deter you from celebrating your small wins. Enjoy the flow of the moment and trust God for a better tomorrow.
