Story of Professor Is-haq Oloyede: The Man Who Changed the Negative Perception Built Around JAMB.

Calm in speech, disciplined in conduct, and deeply rooted in scholarship, only a few names command as much respect as Is-haq Oloyede in Nigeria’s education system. For many Nigerians, his name became closely connected with reform, transparency, and accountability in public institutions. Oloyede built a reputation that stretched beyond classrooms and university walls into national service.

Born on October 10, 1954, in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Professor Oloyede grew up in a period when education was regarded as the strongest ladder to greatness. He attended Progressive Institute, Agege, Lagos, before proceeding to the Arabic Training Centre, popularly known as Markaz, where he deepened his knowledge of Arabic and Islamic studies. His hunger for learning later took him to the University of Ibadan and eventually to the University of Ilorin, where he earned a First-Class degree in Arabic Studies. His academic journey reflected hard work and consistency from an early age.

Oloyede rose through the ranks at the University of Ilorin, becoming a professor in 1995. He stepped boldly into administration and leadership, unlike many scholars who remained only in the academic circle. Over the years,  he served in several strategic positions within the institution before emerging as Vice-Chancellor in 2007.

During his tenure, the university gained national recognition for academic stability, discipline, and improved global ranking. Many education analysts still point to that period as one of the institution’s most stable eras.

Beyond the university environment, he became known for promoting dialogue and national unity. He served as Secretary-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs and also worked with the Nigerian Inter-Religious Council. Those roles placed him at the centre of conversations about peace, religious understanding, and national development.

However, it was his appointment as Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board in 2016 that brought him into the daily consciousness of millions of Nigerians. At the time, JAMB faced widespread criticism over examination malpractice, financial transparency, and operational inefficiency. Many doubted whether meaningful change could happen inside the examination body.

His reforms earned praise from government officials, education stakeholders, and anti-corruption advocates across the country, as Oloyede arrived with a different approach.

Within a short period, he introduced stricter monitoring systems, strengthened the computer-based testing structure, and blocked several loopholes linked to fraud and impersonation. Under his leadership, JAMB began remitting billions of naira into government coffers, which was recorded as a sharp contrast to the low remittances in previous decades.

What made Oloyede stand out was not just policy changes, but his personal style of leadership. He projected the image of a public servant who valued integrity over publicity. Colleagues often described him as principled, disciplined, and straightforward. Even critics admitted that his administration changed public perception about JAMB.

Yet leadership also came with difficult moments.

In 2025, during controversies surrounding technical glitches that affected UTME candidates in parts of Lagos and the South-East, Oloyede publicly apologised to the affected students and families. He reportedly broke into tears while addressing the issue, an emotional moment that drew national attention. For many Nigerians, it revealed the human side of a man often seen as strict and reserved.

By 2026, the Federal Government announced a successor, after serving two terms as JAMB Registrar with accountability in the examination body.

Today, Professor Is-haq Oloyede remains one of Nigeria’s most influential education administrators. His story is not merely about occupying public office; it is about rebuilding trust in a system many had lost faith in. He carved a legacy defined by discipline, scholarship, and service. For students preparing for examinations, lecturers shaping young minds, and public officials managing institutions, Oloyede’s journey offers a simple message: leadership achieves more when honesty and competence work together.
