NIGERIAN YOUTHS AND DRUG ABUSE

NIGERIAN YOUTHS AND DRUG ABUSE: THE EFFECTS ON NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The problematic dilemma of youngsters and their rising consumption of dangerous drugs are of great threat to not only themselves but to the Nigerian nation as a whole. The multiplier danger of this evil tendency is legion. For the youngsters, wanton consumption of dangerous drugs blow their minds into hallucination which makes them feel on top of the world causing them to talk down on their parents, their loved ones and even the elderly in the society.

Moreover, they live in the world of their own where almost everyone is perceived as an enemy. These negative tendencies drive them out of their ways to start inflicting havocs on the society. This is where the Nigerian nation starts receiving blows of their havocs as the effects of their hallucination. In other words, the Nigerian nation is worse for it. As these traits deepen, they metamorphose into aphrodisiacs causing them to plunge into rape, hooliganism, cultism and other related vices.

As their cases degenerate, we see cases of full blown mental derangement as these illicit drugs lead the youngsters to take up arms against the society. This manifests in terrorism, kidnapping for ransom, gang rape, armed robbery and all manner of heinous crimes in the process of playing out their hallucination. We encounter scenarios where they go in their peer groups and inflict their gangsterism on innocent citizens. They break into banks, smash their way through markets and constitute terrible menace on commuters on the highways. The farmers are not spared of their attacks as daily reports of their beheading farmers abounds giving them impossible conditions for their co-existence.

We can attest to the number of gruesome killings that have become almost a daily occurrence in this nation. As a result of fear for their lives, a lot of people are very careful to ply our highways or even to visit the rural areas as part of their own individual safety measures since security challenges in Nigeria have taken a deeper toll. The rest of their havocs on the nation is subject to your imagination. These unimaginable acts that are now part of today’s realities in our society have political ramifications. Owing to these, our government should consider that their actions are already injurious to the image of our great nation. As such, much caution and adequate parameters should be applied to forestall further damages on the image and security of our dearly beloved nation globally.

In these desperate moments therefore, if there can be a stronger collaboration among the concerned relevant authorities, this will aid to intensify the war against illicit drugs in order to mitigate the effects of the use of illicit drugs on our youths so as to curb these menaces in our society. One way to reduce the widespread of these illicit drugs consumption is through Fiscal Technique. By this we mean the regulatory body in-charge should find a way to make these drugs very expensive so that it will no longer be accessible to youths because most of the drugs are so affordable that they are even sold by roadside-vendors. This might not end the intake of the illicit drugs among our youngsters but at least will curb the excessive consumption of the hard drugs among them.

Finally, as part of our social responsibility, we appeal to the federal government to invest tremendously even to an inexhaustible degree if it is possible, into social development programmes and involve more stakeholders who are truly committed in nation building to mediate and intensify orientation  programmes, counsellings to intimate our ever teeming youths most especially, our teens  about the dangers of  the consumption of illicit drugs and to guide them to channel their energy very early in life into appropriate social development programmes that could help them discover and build their potentials as well as aid national development.
