THE LOOMING ASUU STRIKE

A DESTRUCTIVE  FORCE TO OUR NATION’S EDUCATION SYSTEM

The recent public outcry of governor Godwin Obaseke of Edo state on the very rising consumption of dangerous and illicit drugs as well as the alarming spike in the festering crime and criminality among Edo youths (by extension the  Nigerian youths) is a very worrisome development. The governor placed the blame squarely on the doorsteps of the federal government, the Academic Staff Union of Universities     ( ASUU), and their lingering labour crisis which has driven some of the idle students into the devil’s workshop with rising consumption of dangerous drugs and criminal activities in the state and the nation at large.

He prayed for the speedy resolution of the federal government/ASUU crisis so that students will go back to their classrooms as soon as possible to forestall further degeneration of the situation. The key question is: will the dynamics of these critical actors involved in this issue ever change? It appears that the two mainstream parties involved are very protective of their own agenda rather than seeking a headway while throwing the weight of their actions/indecision on the future of our teeming youths who stay at home to wallow in hopelessness and at best many seek a means of escape by cushioning the effects of the pressure with drugs and criminality.

Meanwhile, much has been said by a lot of stakeholders who are committed to nation-building to persuade the federal government and ASUU to come to the round table to fix this cogent lingering issue so that our youths will go back to the classroom and see to it that Nigeria’s education system is stabilized so as to secure the future of our youths who we know have a stake in this nation because they will one day contribute their quota to the effective working of the system of this great nation. In the buildup of this event, it is in the hands of these two parties to determine whether to mar or strengthen the whole process.

On a final note, if the federal government and Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) claim that they see possibilities in the future of our teeming youths, then they should take into cognizance that whatever role each party plays today in the resolution of this impending issue will determine the quality of our educational system and the future of the posterity of this great nation.
