SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES OF THEIR TELEVISIONS’ PROGRAMMES
Ideally, one can draw inferences from the structured table of programmes for Channels TV, TVC and Arise television to provide empirical facts about their programmes. The three stations share the same programme contents.
That is, the analysis shows that the three TV stations’ programmes focus on news contents(local and international). The next programmes are structured around politics which gets the bulk of attention. Then, you have business, sports, lifestyle, entertainment, and the likes. Although they exhibit slight variations in their content packages and delivery, their contents show that they are not completely different from the other.
For instance, Channels 9am-10am -Sunrise (programme)
TVC 9-10:30am-Your View
Arise TV- The Morning Show…all project news content, politics, business, sports.
However, there are slight differences in their styles of delivery. For TVC’s Your View, their delivery pattern is not strictly formal as the anchors, Morayo and her team, share their perspectives on the issues at hand in a little relaxed tone and style. However, Arise TV-The Morning Show is delivered with an aggressive debate style where the hosts, Dr. Ruben Abatti, Rufai and other team members intentionally throw questions to their guests in a way that will make them sit on the edge of defence almost from the beginning of the programme to the end. Most times, the programme starts with an induced argument like a debate, and ends with a heated style pushing the guest to defend his or her side of position.
From my observations over time, the style of Arise Morning Show makes the programme more engaging, and their ever increasing target audience are drawn to enjoy the show because it sometimes appears like a drama that needs to be followed to the end in order to understand the outcome of the events. The Lagos audience, for instance, must have something to discuss about The Morning Show almost on a weekly basis. This pattern of delivery from my own perspective has helped to attract more audiences to Arise television programmes. Anchors of Channels programmes adopt similar delivery pattern with Arise television.
From the foregoing, it can be deduced that the different televisions stations create similar content to target the same audience. The major difference is in their strategy of delivery to capture their audiences. Media as it is said, is business. They strategically sell their packages to their audiences as mentioned earlier, because they are all contending for the attention of the same audience.
Timing is another point. That means that timing is key in broadcast media. At 12noon for instance, all of them project news contents in their various packages because the target audience wants to know what is happening around them. So, they present their programme packages to succor their appetite. No television station wants to give something less so as not to lose the loyalty of their audience.
Ideally, the stations open officially by 6-7am. This similarity reflects in the timing of their programmes also. Every station desires to reach out to its target audience for want of attention and dominance. Significant reference is drawn from their programme activities to buttress this point.
TVC for instance, projects such early morning programmes as 6:30 am-Reporter’s File and then by 7am-TVC Breakfast fully kick-start the station’s daily programmes.
For Arise TV 6-8am-Daybreak which centres around news, politics, and newspaper review, as such officially opens the station activities or set of programmes for the day. Such is also the case of Channels TV which station’s programmes officially start by 7am.In spite of the similarities, there are also points of divergences which often reflect in their various ideologies, values and objectives as earlier identified in the analysis.
In summary, the three television stations share certain similarities in programme contents, although there could be a slight variation in delivery style.
