THE WAY FORWARD
National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) is a federal law enforcement agency officially established in Nigeria on 29th December 1989 to combat illicit drugs and related offenses. Many authentic sources have it that from its inception, the agency has been at the forefront of the fight against the eradication of drug abuse in Nigeria and beyond.
Most significantly, the dramatic entry of Brig. Buba Marwa (Retd.), OFR, into the (11th) chairmanship fuddle of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has given the fight against illicit drugs and abuse a new boost as it is no longer business as usual for drug barons and their nefarious couriers in Nigeria and around the world. Hardly a day passes without a major haul by NDLEA on illicit and dangerous drugs. We must commend this laudable gesture.
However, greater and more effective modalities have to be employed to checkmate the activities of these drug lords through which the illicit drugs are dispatched. Be it known to us that some of the social vices that we encounter in our society today are largely connected to drug abuse. The excessive consumption of illicit drugs leads to drug addiction which manifests through the amplification of violent crimes like gun violence and other related menaces that are even beyond our imagination and are prominent in our nation today. The magnitude of the destruction from these vices results in the loss of lives and properties as we witness in our present society. Meanwhile, the world now views Nigeria “ …as a figurative representation of the vast region of the mountain forest where danger looms every moment” (Chinese proverb). Hence, it should be noted that this fight is not an easy one because the barons who are committed to this business modify their schemes every now and then.
Having identified all these, the concerned authority should devise more sophisticated mechanisms for tackling this particular crime in order to be able to change the narrative. Exclusively, it will be good for the tiers of our government to synergize and show their readiness to adopt stricter measures, especially in relation to innovative techniques to further boost this fight if we must redeem our fast disappearing reputation globally.
